IKEA Hack

February 10, 2012

Are you familiar with an Ikea Hack? It’s basically when you modify or re-purpose a piece of Ikea furniture into something else..pretty fun, right?

There is a whole website dedicated to readers who submit their hacks and include how-to’s.. check that out here.

Here are a few of my favorite hacks.

A turtle terrarium made out of an Ikea TV unit.

A glass block bathroom wall made from vases…

Speakers made from salad bowls…

Custom nail-head table using 2 $7 Ikea tables..(psst..I might need to try something like this in the near future!)

Hmmm.. and here’s on that I probably wont be trying…but a very creative spin on the BJURSTA dining table…

Anyways…I mentioned in this post that we were heading to Ikea to work a little organization magic in our closet office. We managed to organize all our goods, and throw in an Ikea hack for under $50!

I’ll let the photos do the talking, but basically it was my job to measure the insides of the closet so we could get shelves that fit..and apparently I was off a bit…8 inches a bit..so we re purposed the shelf.

I have to give  my crafty Nick all the credit on this one..all his idea and work..I woke up on Saturday morning and he was sawing away. It’s nice to have the food and water off the floor and to shut the door and the bowls away when we need to.

As far as the rest of the closet…we added 5 shelves and 2 wire drawer chests on the bottom. Everything has a place!

I have my sewing machine and fabric on the top shelf. Craft glue, paint, mod podge, paper punches and more on the next shelf. Wire hanging baskets with different kinds of card stock and special papers, basic office supplies, mail supplies, and then kitchen canisters with beads, string, and tacks/paper clips..etc..(wow do I sound nerdy!)

The next shelf is filled with nifty Ikea paper storage boxes.

Even a spot for Moxies food!

For wrapping paper storage…we bought a corner wastepaper basket at Ikea, and screwed it to the corner wall a couple feet off the ground to get it out of the way. Perfect for all the rolls and gift bags.

And here is our office..a little more complete..with a gallery wall that’s very much not complete…

See this couple? They’re our really good friends…we have them displayed in 5 different frames on our wall, some horizontal, some vertical. Don’t they look like fun people? Very happy!

What about you? Have you hacked any Ikea goods?
Do you hang frames on the wall with the models still on display in them?
I wonder how long those two will be on display in our office? I wonder how many rooms in this country they are on display in?

What is everyone up to this weekend? We’re having a dinner party with 2 other couples tonight, spending Saturday afternoon with Nicks parents, and then some early morning hiking with the pup on Sunday and a freezer meal party with my girlfriends on Sunday afternoon. Have a great weekend everyone!

Love this idea. You’ll never trip over a doggie water dish with this system (which always sucks)!! Love your friends on the wall too. 🙂

Me to! For some reason it’s a lot easier to stay organized when your closets are organized and filled with cute things that should be displayed 🙂

CJ Ikea hacked an entertainment center to make it bigger. Not very creative but it is beautiful and works great!
